December 29, 2003 7:45am 4:15pm Time:
8:30 hrs.
Today is my first day of
Job-shadowing Dr. Hasan Fatteh. As appointment was at 8:00am I left from home at 7:45am and was at time. I have to wait for half an hour
as Dr. Fatteh came late as he has to go to other hospital as an emergency. Dr. Fatteh came at 8:30 and after that I started
job-shadowing. First of all he called me and gives some advice about his job and working whole day. As there were many patients
he than proceed his regular job. In order to determine whether or not a patient can receive a corrective procedure on their
eye(s), the ophthalmologist must first evaluate the patient to determine the diagnosis and what type of procedure may be necessary.
The doctor asks the patient about their health such as diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol, allergies, and family history
of glaucoma. These all play a great role in determining what is wrong with the patient. If the patient is new, the doctor
checks the patients eye curvature using an instrument called a corneal topographer. This machine helps in measuring the approximate
curvature of the cornea, and it also gives an approximate prescription number for eyeglasses.
This makes the examination much easier. After the patient is asked to read an eye chart 20 feet away by the use of
a mirror, the vision is determined to be 20-20 or 20-30, etc. The patient is then asked to see through different types of
glasses. The doctor then determines their exact prescription number for glasses. The machine that is used during this procedure
is called a phoropter. The pressure in the eye is checked to make sure that the patient does not have glaucoma. The pressure
inside the eye should be from eleven to twenty-one. If pressure is not within this range, there might be a possibility of
glaucoma. The machine used for this is called a tonometer. A slit lamp is an instrument used in seeing inside the eye and helps in seeing the retina which is located
in the posterior region of the eye. It also helps in seeing the optic nerve and locating the blind spot in the eye called
the fovea. The doctor dilates the eye and waits for 15-20 minutes which will help in seeing the retina without any disturbance.
After the exam, the doctor can then determine the diagnosis and necessary procedures/instruments needed to correct the patients
vision. The patient is finally scheduled for a follow-up appointment. And whole day we did same thing to all other patients.
At 4:00 pm as my uncle came to pick up me I left and Doctor told me see you next day same time. I left at 4:00 pm and reach home
at 4:15.
December 30, 2003 7:45am 4:15pm Time: 8:30 hrs.
Today is my second day of job shadowing Dr. Fatteh.
This day we did the procedure as we did on the first day. Whole day we did same procedure in curing patient. The one different
on both day was on second day I say lasik process. A 65-year-old female patient initially came in for a routine eye exam and
was diagnosed with a severe cataract in one eye. The best option to treat her
condition was through laser surgery. Dr. Fatteh dilated the patients eye and then used laser surgery to remove the cataract. Doctor explains me what is Laser Surgery. Laser surgery is known as Lasik. Lasik is
a surgical procedure which helps in reducing a persons dependency on glasses or lenses. This surgery changes the shape of
the cornea permanently. To have a clear image, the cornea and the lens of eye must bend as necessary in order to make the
image fall directly on the retina. The patient will return after a month to determine the success of the laser surgery. After
this lady one boy of age 10 years old was brought for check up by his mother. The
boy was afraid of check up but doctor check up his eyes so nicely that he tell that no he will come for routine check up and
will not afraid to check up by Dr. Fatteh. And curing patient one by one whole day pass. And at 4:00 pm my uncle came to pick me
up and than I thank Dr. Fatteh for let me job shadow him and also explaining all procedures and instruments used during procedure.
And than I finally thank him again and left hospital 4:00
pm and reached at home 4:15 pm.
