Dear Judges:

My name is Vrajesh Patel, and I am a senior at Lakeside High School. I am originally from India, but in May 2003, I am migrated to the United States. I like playing volleyball, cricket and basketball. In India, I used to spend my free time with friends and family, going to watching movies, and going outside to relax. I wish to pursue a degree in electrical engineering and potentially to, attend medical school to be an ophthalmologist. I came to this conclusion by working on my senior research paper about the human eye and by shadowing an ophthalmologist.

In my senior project, I have chosen to research the human eye as the eye is a vital part of our body. The eye also helps us to view how beautiful our surrounding world is. During this past year, my activities included the letter of intent, the sign of commitment, interviewing an ophthalmologist, writing a thank you letter to the ophthalmologist whom I interviewed, the annotated bibliography, the research paper, and finally job-shadowing as my product. I shadowed for fifteen hours, and then I present what I have learned to the class (other than my English class). There are two reasons why I have chosen the topic of the human eye to do my research on. Many of my relatives have glasses and other problems of the eye such as glaucoma. I find the eye intriguing and wanted to learn how these problems develop and how they can be treated. I was given the opportunity in my senior year.

After completing my different parts of research on the human eye, the easiest thing for me was the interview. I had many questions about diseases of the eye, and I was able to answer many of these by interviewing an ophthalmologist. Actually, this interview gave me a new outlook on my future. The hardest part in my research topic was the research paper and job shadowing. I am a new immigrant to the United States, and it was difficult for me to write my research paper without mistakes because my English is not as strong as someone who grew up within United States. Also I had a hard time while shadowing because I was nervous and it was difficult for me to understand and to communicate with others.

As a result of this senior year, I was able to answer question in my mind about the human eye. I will be able to make my relatives and friends aware about the eye and different ways to prevent or correct diseases associated with the eye. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for spending your time and coming here to watch my entire years work on the human eye.

Sincerely
