                 Interview report:

         Hasan Fatteh, an Ophthalmologist

Fatteh Hasan, an Ophthalmologist in Augusta. He is a good Ophthalmologist. I came to know about him through my uncle. Dr. Fatteh is my uncles eye doctor. He does good eye check-ups, and he was educated at The Medical College of Georgia. I interviewed him in his office at 1212 Augusta West Pkwy, Augusta on September 19, 2003 at 3:10 p.m.

PATEL:  Can you help me to understand what nearsightedness and farsightedness mean?

FATTEH: These are the two common eye errors. So far as your eye is concerned there are two parts of the eye that are essential to control refractive power. They are the cornea and the lens. It is shape of cornea that essentially makes you either nearsighted or farsighted. If your cornea is too Stepper, or have more than needed refractive power then you will become nearsighted or if it is flatter than the average than you came farsighted. From name itself it come know that nearsighted means that one can see only near things and the farsighted means that one can see only far things. Scientific name of Nearsightedness is myopia and farsightedness is hyperopia.

PATEL:  How do you correct vision of people to 20-20?

FATTEH:  People who are nearsighted have a hard working cornea and can be corrected by glasses that nullify the extra cornea, which has become thick. Farsighted people have a flattened cornea and their vision can also be correct by glasses that increase the cornea as necessary. Other ways to correct vision problem are by contact lenses and also processes called Lasik processes (which is type of laser surgery).

PATEL:  Can you explain what astigmation is & Presbyopia is? How you correct them?

FATTEH:  Astigmation is one other error of eye vision. As in nearsighted have stepper cornea and look for smaller ball and in farsighted it has flattened curvature looks like bigger ball. Astigmation have different curvature as we see from up and down or from one side to other (it looks like egg). Astigmation can be corrected by glasses or by focal lenses. In astigmation we have fussy image. Presbyopia is essentially a change in the lens that occurs in middle years. The cornea cannot change its shape as refractive power is fixed, but refractive power of lens can be variable depending upon where object is placed.  If the object is far, then it becomes flattened. If the object is near, the lens becomes thick or rounds up. In presbyopia the eye needs more refractive power so the lens can change to what is necessary. One has to wear farsightedness glasses if nearsightedness never has occurred and bifocal glasses for those whom nearsightedness occurred before farsightedness.

PATEL:  How is eye vision cured by laser method?

FATTEH:  One name of laser method is Lasik process. In laser method doctors try to make lens form flatten or stepper to normal and make vision as a normal eye. Doctors pass a ray to the eye and correct lens as necessary. Thus one can see any object very clearly and without glasses or lens.

PATEL:  Is it true that the person who has diabetes may have the eye problem? Why?

FATTEH:  Mostly the people who have diabetic can also have eye problem. But this is true because they dont take care of their health and do not control their diabetes. Diabetics people have eye problems later and thus they are indirectly related to each other. If they take care of their diabetic diseases, then they would not have developed eye problems.

PATEL:  What kind of instruments do you use to work with and cure the diseases?

FATTEH:  There are many instruments for curing an eye diseases but it is essentially the use of higher magnification as in a microscope for eye exam.

PATEL:  Are most eye problems related to birth or genetics or to other reasons such as diet or health?

FATTEH:  Most eye problems are not related to genetics, but there are some diseases related to genetics. Most are related to diabetic person and also some eye problems are because of a poor diet. Poor diet also includes the drunkard or drug addicted person. Alcohol and drugs slow the body processes and also slow down the changes in the lens that are necessary to can see object.

Dr. Hasan Fatteh is really a good doctor, and his behavior to his patients is really pleasant. I learned many things about the eye and much information that I can use in my senior project. I came to know many more things about the eye as he taught me as a teacher. He gave me more information than was necessary. Doing this interview satisfies me.
